French steel workers occupy Arcelor Mittal plant - The Economic Times: "FLORANGE(FRANCE): Workers at an idled ArcelorMittal steel plant in northeast France occupied the site on Monday, seeking to put their plight on the political map ahead of a presidential election where industrial decline is a central theme.
Some 200 workers invaded management offices at the factory in Florange, in the Moselle region close to Belgium and Germany, after ArcelorMittal announced last week it was prolonging the temporary shutdown of its two blast furnaces.
Unions had announced at the weekend their intention to take action and workers found the offices empty. They say they will stay in the plant indefinitely.
The plant's two blast furnaces were shuttered in July and October 2011 in the face of weaker demand and workers fear that the longer they stay idled, the greater the chance the factory will be permanently closed. "

BRUSSELS — Chemicals giant Solvay hailed the successful entry into service in Flanders of what it said was the largest fuel cell of its type in the world on Feb. 6
A super-battery that produces enough electricity to power nearly 1,400 homes, the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell has been producing clean electricity at a "steady rate" for weeks at a SolVin plant part-owned by Germany's BASF in Antwerp, northern Dutch-speaking Belgium.
SolVin is a market leader in vinyl, or PVC production.
The fuel cell converts the chemical energy from hydrogen into clean electricity through an electrochemical reaction with oxygen, and "has generated over 500 MWh in about 800 hours of operation," Solvay said in a news release.

Democrats in Missouri are knocking a Republican Senate candidate for taking a hefty salary from the family company he said he was no longer running at the same time that the company laid off workers.
John Brunner, one of three Republicans vying to take on Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) in November, officially entered the race in October — the same month that Vi-Jon, his family’s health and cosmetic products company, commissioned a round of layoffs that included 36 workers.
Brunner had stepped down as the company’s CEO at the end of 2009, then bowed out of his role as chairman of the board in September 2011, anticipating his entrance into the Senate race the next month. He still serves on the board of directors.
Brunner has used his more-limited role to argue he wasn’t intimately involved in day-to-day decisions at the time the company was letting go of employees. But Brunner’s financial disclosure, filed in early February, shows he took a salary of $372,000 for 2011, which Democrats say chips away at his ability to distance himself from the layoffs.

House freshmen have been on the job for almost exactly a year, and until now they've done little more than talk about cutting the national debt.
But on Wednesday morning, eight lawmakers finally decided to take action. They scheduled a "major announcement," invited the media and declared that they had a plan to reduce the deficit by — are you sitting down? — $1.435 million.
That amounts to a whopping less than 0.00001 percent of what the nation owes. Among budget analysts, the technical phrase for this is "chump change."
The lawmakers announced that they were returning unused portions of their office budgets in the hope that the money could help pay down the debt. And they were feeling mighty pleased with themselves.
"Now, I can hear the pundits saying, 'Oh, these freshmen, they're just grandstanding,'" said Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C.. Now, why might a pundit say that? Well, maybe because Duncan delivered these words while posing before TV cameras and holding an 11-by-17 mock-up of a check with "taxpayer protection" written in the memo field. Upon completion of the grandstanding, they marched into the Capitol to deliver their "checks" to Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Missouri will have an election next week that doesn't count. I'm talking about the Republican presidential primary. It will not count because of national party rules that were meant to preserve the status of the states that traditionally have been first to select delegates for the national conventions.
Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina are allowed to go first. Everybody else is supposed to wait until March.
If a state violates these party rules by selecting delegates before March, that state runs the risk of losing delegates.
In an effort to preserve its delegates, the Missouri Republican Party decided that Tuesday's election won't count. Delegates will be selected during caucuses in March.
Making Tuesday's election even more meaningless, Newt Gingrich isn't on the ballot.
