tammy duckworth visit to southern illinois tomorrow

I just found out the Labor Temple meeting with Congressman Duckworth in the morning was a request from their campaign to meet with Steelworkers that are currently laid off.

She is having two more public meetings tomorrow in the area with open invitations at Pitcher’s restaurant in Belleville at 11:30 a.m. and at the Steamfitter’s Hall in Caseyville at 3:30 p.m.

 Sorry for the confusion.

We would like to have several of our SOAR members to attend this meet and greet with Congresswoman Duckworth.

Quinn and Senate Democrats strip collective bargaining rights

Springfield – Thousands of union members gave up their free time last fall to work on behalf of candidates who would fight for working families in the General Assembly.
But after knocking on thousands of doors, making thousands of phone calls, and mailing thousands of pieces of literature on their behalf…several of these COPE-endorsed candidates voted to strip collective bargaining rights away from union members who are given a title of  “manager,” even if they have no managerial responsibilities.
“This is a core issue for all of Labor,” said Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael T. Carrigan.  “If this can be done to some, it can be done to anyone. It sets a terrible precedent. ”
With the passage of the bill, SB 1556, there is no longer a requirement that an individual be engaged in management a substantial amount of time or as a major function of their employment to qualify as a “manager,” Carrigan said.
Thus employees whose primary responsibilities are not managerial could be denied the right to collectively bargain for better working conditions.
It took the Governor’s office and his legislative supporters six times over the course of two years to pass SB 1556.
The issue developed when Gov. Pat Quinn discovered he could not replace staff in the governor’s office who were hired by former governor Rod Blagojevich. Their jobs were protected by a union contract for public employees. So Quinn promoted SB 1556 to exempt the governor’s staff from a union contract.

Anti-worker bills already clouding legislative session

Jefferson City – Several anti-worker bills were pre-filed for this legislative session, promising more of the same from Missouri’s Republican controlled legislature, Missouri AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Mike Louis said.
“We wish the legislators would be serious about creating jobs and doing what’s best for the working families in Missouri in creating good paying jobs and quit playing games with catch phrases like ‘right-to- work’ and paycheck protection and prevailing wage, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the trend in pre-filed bills,” said Louis, the state federation’s lead lobbyist in Jefferson City.
Louis, a former business representative for Machinists District 9, took over the secretary-treasurer’s post this year following the retirement of longtime Secretary-Treasurer Herb Johnson. (See related story at the end of this post.)
Louis said the pre-filed bills include measures addressing “right-to-work” (for less), paycheck deception, a measure repealing all prevailing wage laws, a measure modifying prevailing wage determinations, a measure on workers’ compensation that includes provisions hurtful to workers and a measure barring employers from negotiating closed shop clauses with their unions.

Walmart strikes are necessary for workers to ever earn a living wage

 Stopped Right to Work
While he was known for his tough bargaining fights, Jerry also understood the political world. In 1978 he was appointed to lead what many viewed as a hopeless effort to defeat a right-to-work referendum in Missouri. He constructed a campaign where workers reached out to farmers and small businesses and framed the issue as a “Main Street” fight against big business. The initiative was overwhelmingly defeated.
Until his illness prevented it, he was working closely with activists in Wisconsin to help unions recover from the assault on public workers, starting on the shop floor.
Since 2009, I have had the privilege of working with Jerry in the Labor Campaign for Single Payer Healthcare, which he co-founded. He saw the healthcare fight as the linchpin of an alternative worker-oriented political economy. Jerry served as unpaid staff to the organization and his leadership, contacts, and respect helped bring a broad group of leaders to the table. Throughout our deliberations, Jerry always advocated for the long view: building a grassroots movement strong enough to confront the massed corporate power at the core of the healthcare system. He stressed connecting our campaign to the fights against concessions at the bargaining table and urged against “inside the Beltway” thinking.
Jerry had an abiding belief in the ability of working people to make a better world for themselves. Despite all the defeats and disappointments, he never deviated from that touchstone. In his recorded remarks to last spring’s Labor Notes Conference he said, “I have an uncompromising faith in the rank and file’s capacity to respond when the truth is shared and a two-way flow of strategic and tactical options is offered the base.”

Hostess Brands Inc. is permanently closing three bakeries following a nationwide strike by its bakers union.
The maker of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread said Monday that the strike has prevented it from producing and delivering products, and it is closing bakeries in Seattle, St. Louis and Cincinnati. The facilities employ 627 workers.

Hostess, based in Irving, Texas, operates 36 bakeries nationwide and has about 18,300 employees. It warned earlier this month that the strike, by about 30% of its workforce, could lead to bakery closures.
