KKK tries to recruit for 'neighborhood watch' program in Springfield

KKK tries to recruit for 'neighborhood watch' program in Springfield

another version of previous story

Complete with the image of a hooded figure, the flyer attempts to recruit people for a so-called neighborhood watch program.  It asks, “Are there troubles in your neighborhood?  Contact the…Klan today.”

“That just tells you what a coward they are.  A simple knock at the door, I can say I am not interested, thank you very much and go on.  But instead they have to come through in the middle of the night and drop a rock in the front yard.  Nah- that is a coward,” Burchett stated.

Steven was not the only one to find one of these fliers in his yard. In fact, KY3 News canvassed the block and found about a half dozen more them still lying on sidewalks and in people's yards.  But the other neighbors were too afraid to go on camera with us.

KY3 News then called the ‘Klanline’ phone number provided on the paper.   We talked a representative, Frank Ancona, who told us his group has a nationwide flyer campaign.  Their goal is to get people to form or join Klan-sponsored neighborhood watch groups to help police fight crime.

Ancona said he wasn’t sure if the flier were distributed as part of an organized effort by his group, or if they were distributed by individual citizen “supports” of the KKK.

He also said the programs are not about race, claiming that if members saw a white guy 'up to no good' they would alert police just as well.
Still, residents say they don't want the Klan's assistance.
“I am upset over this. I have no use for them people. None whatsoever,” explained Burchett.  “You know this is 2013.  I don’t know what to say for words on that part on how much hate and discontent can just keep on going.

Aside from a jury duty notice, a bag of burning feces or maybe an Amway salesman, the last thing anyone wants to find on their doorstep is an invitation from the Ku Klux Klan. So imagine the horror of Springfield, Missouri, residents last week who discovered a recruitment flier from the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan while reaching for their morning papers.

IBEW Healthcare White Paper healthcare

The IBEW is a strong supporter of the Affordable Care Act because the goal of making sure every American has access to quality and affordable health coverage has been a legislative priority for the IBEW since our founding,” says Hill. “But our members and allies employers have worked hard for the healthcare they have, and Obama must move now to guarantee that his signature law will not cost them their coverage.”

The problem is that the ACA’s definition of a small business – one that employs fewer than 50 employees – exempts large parts of the American economy from the health care mandate. For example, approximately 90 percent of construction contractors employ less than 50 workers, which gives low-road companies in construction and other industries an incentive to not provide their employees’ health care, putting additional pressure on employers that do.

Workers who are not covered are eligible for a federal subsidy to purchase their own health care – an option not available to employees covered by multiemployer plans.
“Businesses that did the right thing all along will be punished while employers who helped contribute to the health care crisis will be rewarded,” says IBEW President Edwin D. Hill. “It goes against the whole spirit of the legislation to begin with.”

The IBEW are calling on the Obama administration to make regulatory changes so workers covered by multiemployer plans are eligible for federal subsidies – just like workers covered by for-profit plans.
“It is a question of fairness,” says Hill. “Multiemployer plans are genuine health care success stories and they deserve the same federal support private insurance companies get.”

Hill is also calling on Congress to amend the Affordable Care Act by lowering the employee threshold to level the playing field in industries dominated by companies with less than 50 workers.

Terry Wooden, longtime president of the Steelworkers Local Union 3643, said he had received telephone calls from salaried and hourly employees through the day on Monday about the possible sale, but he is maintaining a positive tone for the future.
“Everybody is in a holding mode,” he said. “I was told by Charlie that the first group is going to come through sometime next week to tour the plant. We have had a good relationship with this company, and we have broken all-time production records in the bar mill and are making record profits. All we can do is wait and see what happens.”
Alton Steel Inc. and the Steelworkers Local Union 3643 signed a historic two-year contract in April. The old contract was set to expire Aug. 20, but the new contract was reached April 26. The two-year extension increases all hourly rates of pay 3 percent, effective Aug. 20, and another 3 percent increase in hourly rates of pay becomes effective Aug. 20, 2014.
Alton Steel took over the old Laclede Steel in 2001, emerged from bankruptcy in 2003 and resumed business with the Alton Steel name. As of May, the plant employed about 312 people. Alton Steel celebrated its 10th anniversary recently and marked record production in the bar mill, producing more than 25,000 tons of bars.

The Missouri Supreme Court is set to review a challenge to a state law regarding survivor benefits in light of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.
In 2009, Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Dennis Engelhard was killed in the line of duty. His partner, Kelly Glossip, sued the state after being denied survivor benefits. The suit was dismissed in a lower court before being appealed to the state Supreme Court.

Back when “grand bargain” fever was gripping Washington earlier this year, progressive activists mounted an uphill campaign against their allies in the White House and the Capitol, warning there would be hell to pay if President Obama went forward with his plan to trim Social Security benefits.
Thanks in part to their effort, along with Republican recalcitrance and changing economic realities, Democrats have abandoned any plans to mess with the social safety net, at least for the moment. The federal deficit has fallen precipitously this year  – Treasury actually ran a surplus in June — and with it, the impetus for a “grand bargain” trading safety net cuts for increased tax revenue has evaporated. (This may have been the White House’s plan all along.)
Now, as Obama prepares to deliver a major speech on the economy today, the scrappy activists who were until recently playing defense against cuts are turning around and pushing toincrease Social Security benefits.
“Social Security is the most effective

Attorneys for Deen and her brother, Bubba Hiers, contend that a woman suing them on the grounds of racial discrimination, among other claims, doesn't have legal standing to file the claim because she is white.
Also read: Paula Deen's Multimillion-Dollar Disaster: What's the Cost of the N-Word?

In a filing Monday, the attorneys pointed to the Supreme Court's court's ruling in the Prop 8 case, Hollingsworth v. Perry, in which the court said anyone suing in federal court must have standing.
The attorneys contend that plaintiff Lisa T. Jackson cannot, as a white woman, claim racial discrimination. That would mean that the line of questioning that led to Deen's admission that she has used the N word in the past shouldn't even have been part of the case.

It's hard to imagine how the lawsuit could do more damage to Deen than it already has -- her N- word admission already cost Deen her relationship with the Food Network and half a dozen endorsement deals, and the planned publication of a book has been canceled. Even if a judge agrees that the case should be partially dismissed, that won't undo the harm to Deen's image.
