ST. LOUIS • The biggest political donor in Missouri history just had a really big month.
Between June 1 and July 1, groups funded by St. Louis-based conservative activist Rex Sinquefield donated more than $4.45 million to three Republican candidates for Missouri statewide office, records show. More than $1.75 million of those contributions were made on Friday.
Those kinds of numbers would look like typos in almost any U.S. venue other than Missouri, one of the few places in America where a wealthy donor can still write any size check he wants to any candidate.

Recipients of campaign donations from Rex Sinquefield-funded organizations between June 1 and July 1, 2016

• Catherine Hanaway, candidate for the Republican nomination for Missouri governor: $2,358,900
• Kurt Schaefer, candidate for the Republican nomination for Missouri attorney general: $1,401,517
• Bev Randles, candidate for the Republican nomination for Missouri lieutenant governor: $691,850

The Global Fund is the single most powerful tool in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, the three deadly diseases that collectively claim the lives of more than 3 million people each year. Through innovative partnerships with governments, civil society, the private sector, and affected communities, the Global Fund channels resources to country-driven programs to deliver essential treatment, prevention and care services. Since 2002, the Global Fund has helped save the lives of 17 million people. We will need at least TWO volunteers at each shift. The first shift is from 8:00-10:00am, and the second shift is from 10:00am to noon. Please indicate which shift you can attend and the number of people in your party. St. Louis – The nation’s highest-ranking union leader, Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, will be in St. Louis on July 9 for a Labor 2016 political rally.
Sign-in for the event will be at 9:30 a.m., followed by the rally at 10:30 a.m. on that Saturday at Sheet Metal Workers Local 36, at 2319 Chouteau Ave.
Union members, leaders, volunteers and activists are invited.
“The stakes are too high in this election for working people to sit out,” the Labor 2016 campaign states. “Join us as we speak up together.”
Trumka is now campaigning to support the AFL-CIO-endorsed Hillary Clinton for president and to explain to union members why apparent Republican nominee Donald Trump is a threat to unions, even though some of his promises may sound enticing.
“If left unattended, the anger and the frustration Trump has tapped into will carry the day,” Trumka told the Washington Post. “But when you give working-class people the facts, I think he falls apart. He’s a house of cards.”
For instance, Trump has stated that workers’ wages are too high and that he fully supports right-to-work.
“When you go in and tell them the truth, you’ve got a yardstick to measure,” Trumka said. “We need to give voters alternatives point for point – wages, taxes, making the rich pay.”
He has described Clinton as a “proven leader who shares our values” and pledged a strong effort by the AFL-CIO to get her elected.
“We will run a sophisticated, targeted ground campaign,” he said. “And with the dire consequences Donald Trump poses for America’s working families, it has to be.”

With time slipping away, Missouri’s four Republican candidates are heightening their attacks — in person and in their ads — as they head into the final stretch before the Aug. 2 primary.
By even their own accounts, Wednesday’s debate at St. Louis Public Radio’s studio – and broadcast by public radio stations around the state — appeared to be their liveliest. And the nastiest.
