United States Steel Corp. expects the current round of negotiations with the union acting on behalf of 13,000 steelworkers nationwide to “reach a competitive agreement without a work stoppage.”
The steelmaker made the comment during a conference call this afternoon on its second quarter financial results.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal story, the company is pursuing a pact with the United Steelworkers that could slash 36 percent from current salary and benefit levels.
The Journal said steelworkers earn an average of $77.40 per hour when salary and all benefits — including pension payments — are entered into the compensation package.
